Dance Workshop

Cuban Salsa

The beauty of learning Salsa in a studio rather than a club is that you get more correction, more tuition in technique, more space (usually) and more chance to go over steps and patterns at your own pace. The classes give every student a chance to develop their technique to a high standard at a pace suitable to them in a fun and easy going environment. Learn basic footwork and simple routines at beginner level. Improver level tackles more complex sequences and Intermediate aims to develop style, technique and improvisation.

If you are interested:
in starting Salsa at The Dance Workshop, you can ring us and discuss your level. All lessons are priced at £6.50

What you should wear :
Dance shoes are preferable; soft comfortable shoes are acceptable for initial classes. No boots, black rubber soles, flip-flops or stiletto heels. Bring a change of shoes as we don’t allow shoes worn straight off the street.

Ballet

Classical ballet classes IDTA based with an element of free work are available from BEGINNERS to ADVANCED . We encourage adults of all ages either with no experience at all or those who just want to come back to ballet after leaving it off. It is never too late to benefit from the discipline of ballet for those who have always wanted to learn. Ballet encourages strength, suppleness and stamina; in the classes the focus is on correct alignment and strengthening the core central muscles. This has a positive effect on improving ones overall posture, strength and poise. Teachers Rita Barker and Joëlle Barker promote a high standard of technique that encourages the best in each individual.

Contemporary Dance

We are often asked what is contemporary. Some people think it’s like hip hop or street dance. To describe it is difficult. It’s more related to ballet but it can also be like jazz or street depending on the influences of the teacher. At Dance workshop it is closer to ballet. Free flowing and plenty of rolling on the floor!

You need to be fairly fit for this class! £6.50 per person – pay as you come.

Each session will cover technique work, performance skills with elements of release technique and centred movement using breath and weight.

If you are interested in Contemporary Dance
please contact the Dance Workshop. Classes are for both young adults and adults.

Pilates

At the Dance Workshop tuition is available in Pilates Mat work either on a one to one basis or in a class.

Though many people think of Pilates as a ‘new form’ of exercise, in reality Pilates has been around for a century. Dancers have been using Pilates since the middle of the last century to increase core strength without building bulk. Pilates is a holistic and integrated method of exercising body, mind and spirit

German-born Joseph Pilates had asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever, which left him with the desire to get physically stronger. He believed the imbalances in the body and habitual patterns of movements caused injuries. After observing links between weak areas of the body and over-compensation of other parts, he developed exercises devised to re-educate and re-align the body.

If you are interested in coming to any Pilates classes:
Anyone wishing to attend Pilates should establish their level with the teacher before attending class and go over any health issues beforehand.

What to wear:
Comfortable clothing such as jogging bottoms and a t-shirt or leotard, with a sweatshirt to keep you warm at the beginning of class. A towel is useful to rest your head on and a mat. (If you do not have a suitable mat, they are available to borrow at The Dance Workshop). Bare feet or socks.
