We encourage adults of all ages either with no experience at all or those who just want to come back to ballet after leaving it off. It is never too late to benefit from the discipline of ballet for those who have always wanted to learn. Ballet encourages strength, suppleness and stamina; in the classes the focus is on correct alignment and strengthening the core central muscles. This has a positive effect on improving ones overall posture, strength and poise. Teachers Rita Barker and Joëlle Barker promote a high standard of technique that encourages the best in each individual. PILATES At the Dance Workshop tuition is available in Pilates Mat work either on a one to one basis or in a class. Though many people think of Pilates as a ‘new form’ of exercise, in reality Pilates has been around for a century. Dancers have been using Pilates since the middle of the last century to increase core strength without building bulk. Pilates is a holistic and integrated method of exercising body, mind and spirit German-born Joseph Pilates had asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever, which left him with the desire to get physically stronger. He believed the imbalances in the body and habitual patterns of movements caused injuries. After observing links between weak areas of the body and over-compensation of other parts, he developed exercises devised to re-educate and re-align the body. If you are interested in coming to any Pilates classes: Comfortable clothing such as jogging bottoms and a t-shirt or leotard, with a sweatshirt to keep you warm at the beginning of class. A towel is useful to rest your head on and a mat. (If you do not have a suitable mat, they are available to borrow at The Dance Workshop). Bare feet or socks. |
